Simulation of laminar flow by the boundary element method in straight rod bundles in ducts

Abstract

The most common use of rod bundles in ducts is as heat exchangers used for cooling fuel rods in nuclear power plants. Most often, rods with a circular cross-section are encased in cylindrical walls or in walls having a regular hexagonal cross-section. An alternative to these solutions may be a duct with a regular octagonal cross-section. This paper presents the results of laminar flow simulations in a straight duct with a regular octagonal cross-section containing a circular rod bundle, using the boundary element method. It was determined how the Poiseuille number and Coriolis factor depend on the geometrical parameters of the duct. Examples of laminar flow velocities for selected duct geometries are also presented
