Bottleneck identification in TOC, a comprehensive literature review along with emerged methodology

AbstractPurpose - The article deals with a significant problem for manufacturing industry related to the location of a bottleneck. The aim of the article is a detailed analysis of methods of bottleneck identification on the basis of a comprehensive literature review and design a generalized methodology for bottleneck identification in the production system. Methodology/Approach - The article uses two research methods, first one is the combination of narrative and scoping literature review, second one is the logical design. These methods allow to identify and evaluate the methods of bottleneck identification in production systems as well as to develop a proposal of generalized methodology. Findings - A crucial step of TOC (Theory of Constraints) implementation to a production system is the determination of system’s bottleneck. Effective bottleneck identification allows to set priorities for the production system improvement. A number of methods of bottleneck identification is reviewed and mutually compared, some of them are found as similar, others as giving new insights in evaluated production system. A methodology for the bottleneck identification is proposed. It contains of several detailed methods arranged in coherent steps, which are suggest to follow when aiming at production system’s bottleneck recognition. Proposed methodology is expected as practically helpful in TOC implementation. Research Limitation/implication - The presented methodology for identifying bottlenecks in the production system is potentially practically helpful for managers and experts dealing with TOC. However, it is still a conceptual proposal which need to be tested empirically. Originality/Value of paper - In the TOC, the first step is to identify the bottleneck. The proposed bottleneck identification methodology is an original concept basing on up to now literature output. It contributes to the production management theory alike as a practical managerial tool.
