Assessment of the maximum temperature in a ventilated brake disc using heat dynamics of friction and wear system of equations

Abstract

In this paper changes of the transient temperature of the brake disc during multiple braking calculated numerically using the finite element method (FEM) have been presented. The main purpose of the carried out study was to determine and compare the mean temperature, flash temperature and the maximum temperature at different conditions of convective cooling. The developed numerical model of the disc takes into account the mutual coupling of the vehicle velocity, temperature, thermal sensitivity of the brake elements’ materials, contact pressure and convection heat exchange in accordance to the postulates of heat dynamics of friction and wear (HDFW). The coupling was obtained by combining the solutions of the initial value problem for the equation of motion and the boundary value problem of heat conduction.
