Factors that determine the servitization of manufacturing in the Polish machinery sector
AbstractPurpose: Servitization of manufacturing is a trend that may be observed in most economy’s worldwide. Manufacturing companies seek new solutions to build a competitive advantage and more commonly they extend their service offer to distinguish themselves on the market. The conditions for the development of the servitization process vary in different countries. The servitization process in manufacturing company is determined by the many factors of a different kind and they have a different type of influence on this process. The aim of the study was to identify the most significant factors that determine the servitization process in the manufacturing sector, in particular, which factors are perceived as more important than others by the polish machinery manufacturers. Methodology/Approach: The first step of the study process was the literature review which was carried out in the field of servitization, product-service systems, and product-service integration. Then the catalog of 9 general factors has been developed and included in the survey addressed to the machinery manufacturers from Poland. The survey was conducted using CATI technique among 150 manufacturers. In the process of the results analysis statistic methods (including cluster analysis) have been used. Findings: Analysis of the scientific literature and synthesis of acquired knowledge has led to the following conclusions: factors determining servitization process may be gathered in two groups of factors: (i) determinants of decision making regarding product and service integration (category: benefits and barriers) and (ii) determinants of the successful servitization process (category: of success factors and reasons for failures). Machinery manufacturers in Poland indicate that the most important factors in the servitization process of machinery manufacturing companies are: customer requirements and preferences, economic and financial analysis, added values for customer and enterprise and also relations, stakeholders and partners in service processes. It also occurred that manufacturers who offer a wide range of services and gain higher revenue from service activity find all indicated factor more significant than those who have fewer services in the offerings and lower income from their providing. Originality/Value of paper: The paper presents the author’s original research that provides new knowledge about key factors that influence the servitization of manufacturing, in particular, the servitization of machinery manufacturers in Poland. It contributes to the development of the product-service integration research area by the original findings concerning the linkage between the range of service activity and how manufacturers assess the importance of studied factors. This paper addresses therefore very up-to-date and needed research problem, and the study result has a great cognitive value for managers who consider or start the journey towards servitization.
